Importance of Protein

I know this- but sometimes I still miss out on getting enough protein…especially at breakfast….especially when I’m in a hurry in the morning…like today…or most mornings!

PB2 has about 5 grams of protein per 2 tablespoons- which is about what I used in my cereal this morning…but that’s not really enough. Add about 2 grams from the cereal and maybe 4 grams from half a cup of milk…only about 11 grams of protein at breakfast…I’d probably feel better if I had closer to 20 grams.

So, by 10:30 this morning, I was starving….

I had a lunch meeting at 12:00, so to hold me over, I drank about half a glucerna…this is a nutrition shake designed for people with diabetes, so we always have them on hand in our office…and they’re okay….but not the greatest…however, it did get me through till lunch.

We had a meeting in the hospital cafeteria with all the hospital dietitians and I had a really good salad from the salad bar…

  • mixed greens
  • cherry tomatoes
  • cucumber
  • onion
  • green pepper
  • sunflower seeds (about 2-3 grams protein)
  • slivered almonds (about 2-3 grams protein)
  • chopped hard boiled egg (about 7 grams protein)
  • yummy honey mustard dressing

It was delicious.  Later this afternoon, I had a yummy Fage 2% with blueberry preserves.

This is one of my favorite snacks right now, and 17 grams of much-needed protein!

Tonight, Anthony and I are planning to go out to O’Charley’s…Anthony found a gift card in his wallet that we had forgotten about, and we’re both tired from long days yesterday, so no cooking or cleaning at home tonight.

Have a great evening!

  1. I really liked how you highlighted the importance of protein in today’s meals.

Do you think the amount of protein consumed/or not consumed is a key factor in keeping someone feeling full until the next meal? And when do you know that you need more protein as oppose to to other things like carbs?

I am a personal trainer. I believe in the importance of nutrition and exercise together. You can do one or the other, but will not see the best results possible if both are not addressed. I know for me personally I could not gain weight. I did some research and found out I was an under eater. Once I started eating the right amounts of carbs, protein, and fats, at the right time, I was able to gain 15 pounds of muscle mass in a couple of months.
